Introduction to 3D

My introduction to 3D design was interesting. Apart from doing product design in year 9 I’ve not really been in a workshop like it since. Finding out the uses for the machinery was very informative and I like that now I know how to use them all if I ever need to.
We were asked, as our introduction to ‘Make a 3D shape’ of sorts, without using glue. I found this surprisingly difficult. Though it was enjoyable, I’m not sure that 3D design if completely for me.

First of all, using the bandsaw, I cut two shapes out of a larger piece of wood I found in the workshop. The process was satisfying but I don’t know how much I liked working with large machinery. Next I drilled holes into the two pieces on the pillar drill, unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get it all exactly right or drill all the way through each piece. The two rods of wood on the right were cut by hand using a saw.

I then secured together my two shapes, firstly using the rods and drilled holes as a structure, with another piece of band saw-cut wood as a base. Before I fixed together with the pieces with wire, I used masking tape to hold it all together. Overall I found the workshop interesting but I don’t feel like 3D work is my cup of tea. I am really glad that I’ll be able to use these machines in the future, maybe for other projects that need unconventional materials to complete them!
