Performance & Environment film workshop

DAY 1 :

The performance and environment workshop today was brilliant. Danni led the workshop and I found it extremely helpful and very enjoyable in the aspect that it really broadened my ideas when it comes to types of art. Being able to explore creating an environment and completely control what our outcome would be is really exciting! I’ve never tried out any 3D work of this scale before and prior to being a bit sceptical about large work, I’ve now found that I really enjoy it. Along with larger scale work, although I’ve never been fond of drama or acting, the performance part of the workshop in the morning was really interesting because it forced us to become immersed in an imaginary environment using description, imagination, music, candid sounds and touch.

Combining our group’s theme of Spellbound and our chosen brief of ‘The tomb of an Ancient King,’ we set about making our environment. Immy, Holly and I decided on a tomb or coffin-like shape, just big enough for one person to curl up or lie down in.

So far, we’ve used acrylic paint, to enhance the look of a ‘tomb like’ installation, cardboard for the walls and general structure, wicker to form the beginnings of a ceiling and an then to top it off (so far) an array of strings to amplify the feeling of being in a damp, mossy and overgrown ancient tomb. We all sat inside and the general consensus is that the installation either, so far feels claustrophobic, or, tranquil. When looking up, there’s a kaleidoscope of colour clashing with the brick and finding chaos within the space. The crazy string or ‘moss’ makes you feel more claustrophobic than it would feel without it.

Personally, once the installation is made and the video & immersive audio has been added, I would love for the feeling inside the tomb to be one of ethereal tranquillity (or at least for me.)  I can’t wait to find out how other’s experience what we have created though…other peoples experiences of our art will be really interesting. After the performance section of the workshop this morning I’ve come to find it fascinating how different everyone’s experiences will be,I’m quite excited about that!

We moved our tomb into a free room with plain walls to take photographs of it in different lighting.

I had the idea to include some of my screen printing acetate sigils and runes to tie these pictures into my own personal spellbound project.

These were the last two pictures I took today, screencaps from experimental videos where we tried out some ideas for the film half of the workshop on Friday. We experimented a lot with facial expressions, movement and lighting, finding out how to cast shadows on the walls from the yarn on our sculpture, moving the lights and cameras too to try out interesting visuals we could use in the final video.
